Who actually has more gun crime, US vs UK?
People outside the US often depict America as a new Call of Duty Warzone map but is this true and how does the UK compare?
Well lets start with the US. In 2022 there were 48,117 deaths by gunshot wound. However, almost 27,000 of those were self unaliving cases so I will be leaving those out of the figures.
The real number we shall be looking at is homicides by gun which sat at 19,592 in 2022. At the time the US had a population of 333 million meaning you had a 0.00588% chance of being shot and killed. Or in other words the mortality rate via guns was 5.878 per 100,000 people.
The UK by comparison had a total of 26 deaths from firearms in 2022. The UK had a population of 67,500,000 people at the time meaning you had a 0.0000385% chance of getting shot and killed in 2022 or in other words mortality rate via guns was 0.0385/100,000 people.
Alternatively if you scaled up gun deaths in the UK to match the US population, there would have been the equivalent of 128 instead of the US’ actual figure of 19,592.
