CAIR Calls for Hate Crime Charges Following Assault on Muslim Women in Milwaukee Park
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 8/1/23) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office to consider adding hate crimes enhancements, if evidence indicates a bias motive, following Sunday’s attack on Muslim women in Cathedral Square Park.
CBS 58 News reports that two alleged attackers have already been arrested on charges of substantial battery.
“We urge law enforcement authorities to probe a possible bias motive for this alleged attack and to bring appropriate charges if hatred inspired the alleged attack,” said CAIR Research and Advocacy Director Corey Saylor.
He added that CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
This includes welcoming the sentencing of the perpetrator of racist harassment targeting a Black people in Milwaukee.
According to CBS 58 News, “Wisconsin law includes an enhancer for hate crimes. In cases where the original charge is a felony, the sentence can be increased by an additional five years in prison and/or a fine can be increased by another $5,000.”
Last year, CAIR released a report, titled “Still Suspect: The Impact of Structural Islamophobia,” documenting more than 6,720 complaints to CAIR offices nationwide involving a range of issues including immigration and travel, workplace discrimination, denial of public accommodations, law enforcement and government overreach, hate and bias incidents, incarceree rights, school incidents, anti-BDS/free speech, among other reported issues.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
