At approximately 11:40 pm on the 20th of August 2020, two officers arrived at a Geelong residence in Waurn Ponds. It was in relation to a noise complaint reported by numerous persons from the area complaining that there was loud music. Shortly after arriving at the property Leading Senior Constable Melinda Wylie and partner Constable Savannah Smith noticed noises described as “thumbing-like club music.”
Wylie attempts to contact anyone inside the home with no response, having knocked on the door for quite awhile. Smith tried to make contact by jumping the fence into the house’s yard; Smith had started to search around the yard, ignoring her off-sider Wylie. The Leading Senior Constable is heard on Bodycam recordings asking Smith to come out of the yard. Wylie had asked Smith a total of 4 times before the shooting to wait for more officers. This is where the released bodycam footage from the Victorian County Court starts.
In Smith’s statements surrounding the shooting, she had spotted a man in the back of the house exiting to the rear of the yard. He began approaching Smith after she yelled, “Hello?”- “Police!. This is where the released bodycam footage from the Victorian County Court starts.
Allegedly a Geelong male from the residence, Andrew Wilczewski, had picked up a shovel when the Smith had approached him in the dark. Smith stated in a Court during the proceedings that she had felt threatened by the actions of Wilczewski. Asking him to “get back” 3 times, Wilczewski, according to Victorian Police, had not complied with this order and was subsequently shot.
Andrew Wilczewski survived being shot in the leg and was transported to the hospital in stable condition. Court proceedings are still ongoing. Wilczewski pleaded not guilty in the County Court.
