Prosecutors have sought an arrest warrant for a former Navy chief for alleged involvement in a corrupt deal related to a salvage vessel.
The retired admiral, Hwang Ki-Chul, is suspected of turning a blind eye to alleged graft in the ship’s parts procurement deal in 2009.
Prosecutors allege that the parts supplier bribed Hwang and his subordinates to win the bidding competition at that time. Hwang denies the allegations but quit as the Navy Chief of Staff last month.
The 3,500-ton Tongyeong salvage ship was found to have many flaws and failed to take part in rescue operations in the Sewol ferry accident in April last year that killed over 300 people.
