According to the NYPD, the incident happened Saturday around 4:15 p.m. when two men attempted to enter the Beth Yaakob synagogue located at 1801 Ocean Parkway.
The two were spotted looking at the surveillance camera and taking photographs of the front of the building, NYPD says.
A security guard patrolling outside the synagogue approached the two men and asked them to leave. They left in a blue Honda Accord. Police were told by other witnesses that the two men were also seen in front of another synagogue on Ocean Parkway about an hour later.
Councilman David Greenfield took to Twitter to urge people to look out for the two suspects.
The NYPD has stepped up patrol at local synagogues and Jewish institutions.
“I urge everyone to stay calm but remain cautious,” said Assemblyman Dov Hikind. “The NYPD’s anti-terrorism unit is taking this matter very seriously and doing everything that they should in light of a potential threat. If anyone has any information, they are urged to contact the police immediately.”
