At the time that this happened we had driven over 9,000 miles in Mexico with nothing but good experiences with law enforcement. It seems like we get stopped at nearly every opportunity (usually checkpoints), and we have never had any issues.
It is usually, “Where are you going?, Where are you coming from?, Do you like Mexico?, etc”
Sometimes they check our documents, but usually they don’t. We have a little chat, and afterwards continue on grateful for the free Spanish lesson. We have always chalked it up to curiosity when the officers see a foreign plated car so far from the border.
This encounter started out totally normal. We were driving on a cuota (toll road) in the State of Mexico when Guardia National (National Guard) officers waved for us to stop after a toll booth (caseta)… after that things took a very bad turn…
