Ecuador is under curfew with soldiers patrolling the streets in several cities after a day of chaos during which armed gangsters stormed a television network and vowed to “wage war” against the government.
President Noboa decreed the country was in a “state of internal conflict”. Shortly afterwards, soldiers were seen close to the presidential palace in the capital Quito and setting up security patrols in other cities. All schools were closed and the parliament’s in-person sessions were suspended. A nationwide curfew from 11pm to 5am was put in place.
The depth of the country’s security crisis had earlier burst into full public view when armed and hooded gunmen, some brandishing sticks of dynamite, stormed the studio of the state run TC television in Ecuador’s largest city, Guayaquil, at about 2pm local time during a live broadcast.
