Battling corruption in Ukraine is a daunting task. But these candidates believe they’re ready to take on the challenge. They want to become the country’s anti-corruption prosecutors. 28-year-old Oleksandr is applying for the job because he wants to fight graft from the inside. He says he is even ready to uproot his life and move to the capital Kyiv from Zhytomyr.
Oleksandr Alexandrov, anti-corruption prosecutor candidate: “My aim is to bring to justice the corrupt few. I don’t have any concrete names yet. But I know there are corrupt officials in our country.”
The committee tasked with choosing the right candidate has a number of guidelines to go by. In front of each member is a thick file with applicants’ personal information.
Nazar Holodnytskiy, Head of Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecution Bureau: “This interview is so that we can inspect the candidates’ past and public testimonies. The lists were posted a while in advance. If there is some information which shows the candidate in a negative light, please let us know. We will determine everything in the interviews.”
The media were given a sneak peek into the interview process. Some of the answers given by the applicants weren’t as smooth as others. One candidate appeared to forget that the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula is still considered a part of Ukraine:
“Tell us how frequently you went abroad in the past two years?”
“Well I went to Crimea.”
“Crimea is Ukraine.”
“Well, yes.”
The final stage of the selection process will be completed over the next few days. 30 anti-corruption prosecutors will be hired from the more than 70 applicants.
