Leeds University’s Oxley Residence offers a bucolic home for students lucky enough to live there. Built in 1861 in the neo-Gothic style, its comfortable rooms boast views over manicured lawns.
But unbeknown to the residents, the operator behind the digs, where rents start at £89 a week, is a company co-founded by Mark Omelnitski, a businessman who has, in the past, been associated with oligarchs sanctioned by the British government.
Oxley is run by Allied Students, a big player in the UK student housing market, with blocks of flats in Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester.
In 2020, Omelnitski was accused in a US Senate report of helping enable Arkady and Boris Rotenberg to buy artworks in London in breach of sanctions rules.
