A webinar discussion featuring Ben Norton, Eliana Carlin Ronquillo Yves Engler and Kirsten Francescone on the uprising in Peru and the role of Canada and the US.
On December 7 elected left-wing president Pedro Castillo was ousted. Nearly two months after, protests and blockades continue across Peru. Security forces have shot hundreds and killed sixty, mostly indigenous, protesters since Castillo’s ouster.
Ottawa immediately backed the ouster and Canada’s ambassador to Peru, Louis Marcotte, has worked to shore up support for Dina Boluarte’s replacement government. Many countries in the region have rejected Boluarte.
This event discussed Canadian and US support for Castillo’s removal as well as Canada’s large mining presence in Peru.
