This week on Keeping an Eye on the Geopolitical Ball, Jamie Shea, Senior Fellow at Friends of Europe, focuses on press freedom, in the light of the death of the French-Bosnian journalist Arman Soldin, killed during a Russian shelling in Ukraine. Shea mentions that journalists are covering conflicts despite the dangers they face, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine is a recent example with several journalists killed by Russian forces in the last year. He explains that press and media workers should be protected at all cost and that freedom of press is key to ensure democracy. When it comes to the EU for instance, Jamie Shea details that the EU institutions have already adopted some rules regarding journalist safety but it can go further. Indeed, the EU has to ensure freedom of press within the EU, as some threats and pressures on journalists and media still exist within EU Member States. Furthermore, some international agreements must be adopted to ensure the safety of journalists and media workers in conflict zones as well as to strengthen the right to inform as key to ensure the freedom of press and thus democratic values.
