At the direction of the City Council, Ann Arbor has completed the citywide removal of more than 600 Neighborhood Watch signs.
The Neighborhood Watch program, which emerged in the 1970s during a period of national anxiety about crime and social change, is defunct, and research shows such signage does not reduce crime and can reinforce biased surveillance.
Removing the signs aligns the city’s environment with its commitment to inclusive, evidence-based public safety and fostering trust, belonging and welcoming neighborhoods for all residents and visitors.
