In 1946, a group of World War II veterans returned home to McMinn County, Tennessee—only to find their town hijacked by a corrupt political machine. When rigged elections, voter intimidation, and even a shooting at a polling place pushed them too far, the veterans armed themselves, stormed the local jail, and took back their democracy by force. What followed was six hours of gunfire, dynamite, and one of the only successful armed uprisings in modern American history. This was the Battle of Athens.
