Police Surround Their Own Headquarters – Confrontation With Man In Bronco | Toronto
Late on the night of March 4 going into March 5, an unusual situation unfolded outside Toronto Police Headquarters at 40 College Street in downtown Toronto.
Multiple police cruisers were positioned on several sides of the building while a K-9 unit searched the area. Officers at the scene were extremely tight-lipped and, as of now, no information has been publicly released about what was happening inside the headquarters.
While documenting the scene from a public sidewalk, I noticed a white Ford Bronco parked near the perimeter. Through the windows of the vehicle, multiple laptops and drones were visible.
When I briefly pointed my camera toward the vehicle, the driver immediately stepped out and confronted me, asking: “What are you filming motherf***er”
During the interaction he grabbed my arm and told me “I’ll smash you bro.”
Two additional individuals remained seated inside the Bronco.
Several uniformed officers were nearby as part of the perimeter surrounding headquarters.
After the incident, I contacted 52 Division seeking clarification. While the officer I spoke with would not directly confirm the identity of the individuals, he repeatedly stated that my “gut instinct was good” and acknowledged there is a police unit like the one I described that operates with equipment similar to what was visible inside the Bronco.
MFIPPA requests have been submitted to obtain records related to the incident and we are awaiting the results.
This raises a broader question:
how far can police go to convince citizens they are not police?Where is the line between legitimate undercover work and behavior that crosses into threats or physical confrontation with members of the public?
More footage from that night will be released.
