On May 13, 1985, in Philadelphia, police carried out one of the most shocking acts in modern American history. Targeting the Black liberation group MOVE, authorities dropped an explosive device onto a residential row house.
The blast ignited a fire—but instead of putting it out, officials allowed it to burn.
Inside, eleven Black people were trapped and killed, including five children. The flames quickly spread beyond the house, engulfing the surrounding block and destroying more than 60 homes. Entire families were displaced, and a once-thriving Black neighborhood was reduced to ashes.
Witnesses described screams, chaos, and helplessness as the fire consumed everything. Survivors later revealed how escape was nearly impossible.
The MOVE Bombing remains the only known time in U.S. history that police dropped a bomb on their own citizens. Despite the destruction and loss of life, no one was criminally charged.
This tragedy raises lasting questions about the use of force, systemic injustice, and how far authorities are willing to go—and why this event is still not widely discussed today.
