Lieutenant Matthew Furman is a troubling figure within the Melvindale Police Department. Over his 12-year career, his name has become synonymous not with justice, but with force—more force than necessary. While his record boasts promotions and commendations, it is equally marred by suspensions, criminal charges, and accusations of brutality.
Furman insists that his aggressive tactics are simply a result of “proactive policing,” claiming that his approach to law enforcement makes him a target for complaints. But the reality is far more sinister. His pattern of violence isn’t about keeping the community safe—it’s about control, intimidation, and a blatant disregard for the very laws he’s sworn to uphold.
In 2019, Furman was charged with assault and battery, along with willful neglect of duty, after attacking an intoxicated individual. Instead of facing real consequences, he took a plea deal, walking away with probation and mandatory anger management—an ironic punishment for someone who has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of control.
His abuse of power didn’t end there. In July 2024, Furman pulled over Drakkar Williams for driving on a revoked license. What should have been a routine stop spiraled into another violent encounter, with Furman once again accused of excessive force. Williams later filed a civil lawsuit, detailing the officer’s unnecessary brutality. Most of the charges against Williams were dismissed, further highlighting Furman’s reckless abuse of authority.
Despite the growing list of accusations, Furman continues to justify his actions, portraying himself as a tough cop who gets results. But the truth is clear: Furman isn’t upholding the law—he’s violating it. And until real accountability is enforced, the cycle of misconduct will continue, with more victims left in his wake.
