The Lilavati Hospital Scandal: Rs 1,200 Crore Fraud and Black Magic Drama Explained
On March 12, 2025, Mumbai’s famous Lilavati Hospital got caught in a massive controversy that’s shaking everyone up. It’s not just about money being stolen—though we’re talking about Rs 1,200 crore or more—but also some wild claims of black magic happening inside the hospital. Let’s break it down in simple words so you can understand what’s going on, step by step.
What’s the Main Problem?
Lilavati Hospital is a big, respected name in Mumbai, run by the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust. The people in charge now (called trustees) are saying that the old trustees—who used to run things—cheated the hospital out of a huge amount of money, at least Rs 1,200 crore. That’s not a small number—it’s thousands of crores! They say this cheating has been happening for years, and it’s only now coming out after some serious checking of the hospital’s accounts.
But that’s not all. On top of the money mess, the current trustees found something creepy: eight pots (urns) buried under the office floor with human bones, hair, rice, and other strange things inside. They’re calling it black magic and saying the old trustees did it to harm them. It’s like something straight out of a Bollywood movie, right? Let’s dig into both parts of this story.
The Money Scam: How Did Rs 1,200 Crore Disappear?
The current trustees, led by a man named Prashant Mehta, hired experts to check the hospital’s money records. These experts, from companies like Chetan Dalal Investigation and ADB and Associates, found big problems. They say the old trustees—many of whom live abroad in places like Dubai and Belgium—were taking hospital money for themselves. Here’s what they found:
1 Fake Deals: The old trustees made fake orders for supplies and paid companies that didn’t even exist. The money went into their own pockets instead of the hospital.
2 Personal Spending: They used hospital cash to pay for their own stuff—like legal fees, fancy properties, and other personal expenses.
3 Sending Money Abroad: Some of the cash was sent to third parties (middlemen) and then moved out of India, maybe to hide it.
The experts think this cheating started way back in 2001 and went on for years. They say the total loss could be as high as Rs 1,500 crore or even Rs 2,100 crore! Imagine how many poor patients could’ve been helped with that money. Prashant Mehta says it’s enough to build “three more hospitals” for the public.
The police have filed three FIRs (First Information Reports) against the old trustees already, and the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) is investigating. The trustees also complained to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which looks into big money laundering cases, because some of the cash might have gone overseas. Plus, the Income Tax people are checking if the old trustees avoided paying Rs 500 crore in taxes. It’s a giant mess!
The Black Magic Twist: What’s with the Pots?
Now, here’s where things get really weird. The current trustees, including Prashant Mehta and a former Mumbai Police boss named Parambir Singh, say they found eight pots buried under the office floor. Inside these pots were human bones, hair, rice, and other things that people use in black magic rituals. They think the old trustees did this to curse Prashant and his mom, Charu Mehta, who are both permanent trustees.
