On July 31, 2025, around 6 a.m., Officer Paul Fencik reported for roll call at a San Antonio police substation. Supervisors noticed a possible odor of alcohol and began looking into the situation. Before the process was completed, Fencik briefly left the station in his patrol vehicle but returned when instructed.

A field sobriety test was then conducted, after which he was arrested for suspected intoxication. A subsequent search of his patrol car reportedly uncovered alcohol inside the vehicle.

Fencik, a longtime member of the department, was booked on a charge of driving while intoxicated while on duty. He has been placed on administrative duty pending both a criminal case and an internal investigation. Police leadership described the incident as a serious breach of public trust.
