Thousands of protesters took to the streets in Nairobi on Wednesday, clashing with police over issues of police brutality and government corruption, as demonstrations spread nationwide.
The confrontations saw police deploying tear gas and using batons, resulting in several injuries. These protests coincide with the one-year anniversary of anti-tax demonstrations that led to 60 deaths and left 20 individuals missing.
The unrest has now extended to major cities such as Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Nyahururu, evolving into demands for the president’s resignation over allegations of poor governance.
Kenyan youth are particularly dissatisfied with the current administration, citing corruption, a rising cost of living, and police brutality, further fuelled by the recent death of a blogger in custody.
Public anger has been intensified by the close-range shooting of a civilian during recent demonstrations.
