In Season 3, Episode 5 of The Rookie, the precinct goes into lockdown due to a bomb threat. No backup available. No one coming to help. And Officer Jackson West is riding with the one cop he trusts the least: Doug Stanton .
After Jackson finally stands up to Stanton—calling out his racist behavior and threatening to report him to his father, who runs Internal Affairs—Stanton sees red. He’s humiliated. And he wants payback .
The call comes in: suspicious activity at a housing complex. Stanton and Jackson go in on foot. They get separated in the maze of buildings .
That’s when they find him. A group of men surround Jackson. They start swinging. Kicking. Punching. Jackson goes down hard, blood pooling beneath him .
And Doug Stanton? He stands at the corner of the building, watching it all happen. His body cam is off. He makes no move to help his fellow officer. He just waits .
“Stanton didn’t just fail to protect Jackson. He set him up to be beaten.”
When Bradford and Chen finally arrive on scene, Stanton pretends they got separated. They round the corner to find Jackson barely conscious on the concrete, his face a mask of blood and bruises .
Stanton kneels beside him, faking concern. But Jackson—barely able to move—reaches up and switches Stanton’s body cam back on .
Here’s the thing about LAPD body cameras: even when they’re off, they record the last two minutes. Everything Stanton did—or didn’t do—is now on tape .
Back at the station, Sergeant Grey watches the footage. His jaw tightens. He turns to Stanton and says two words:
“You’re done.”
Stanton’s gun and badge are taken. He’s placed on administrative leave. And Jackson West lies in a hospital bed, bruised and broken, but victorious .
Later, Grey visits Jackson in the hospital. Tears in his eyes, the seasoned sergeant tells the rookie:
“I am so damn proud of you.”
Jackson, bloodied and bandaged, manages a weak smile:
“It was worth it… to get the needle moving in the right direction.”
One of the most brutal, emotional, and powerful episodes of the entire series. Jackson West put his life on the line to expose a dirty cop—and in doing so, reminded everyone what real courage looks like. 💙
