Bangladesh: Students Allege Physical Abuse By Police, Protests Cancelled For Two More Days
Student activists in Bangladesh claim they were abducted and tortured during a violent police crackdown on protests that have swept the nation, resulting in the arrest of thousands of political opponents and government critics. The leader of these student demonstrations extended the suspension of protests for an additional 48 hours on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Bangladesh partially restored telecommunication services, although internet connections remained slow and social media access was still blocked. These developments come after deadly protests against government job reservations, which resulted in almost 150 deaths. The country has been relatively calm since Sunday when the Supreme Court reduced job reservation quotas to 7%, overruling a high court decision that had reinstated a 56% quota previously scrapped in 2018.
