Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack says “our police are there to protect us” and it is “reprehensible” for protesters to hold up signs emblazoned with the words ‘a good cop is a dead cop’.
His comments followed warnings from the OECD who have indicated a second wave of coronavirus infections would come at a high cost due to the need to enforce further lockdown restrictions.
However, protesters have not heeded these warnings and plan to hold anti-racism rallies this weekend in major cities across Australia.
Mr McCormack said “state premiers have made it quite clear and the prime minister has made it quite clear these protests are unlawful”.
“If these people are breaking state laws, then they should have actions taken against them”.
