On February 20th, 2026, just after 5 a.m., police in Antioch, California were called to a grocery store after a vehicle slammed straight into the front doors during an armed robbery.
Three suspects jumped out and ran inside, with at least one of them threatening an employee with a gun.
But just minutes later, officers arrived — and that’s when everything spiraled.
The driver, Dominick DeSouza, suddenly rammed his car into a patrol vehicle. One officer, who was on foot, reached into the driver’s side — and a struggle broke out.
In the middle of that struggle, the officer was pulled into the vehicle as DeSouza hit the gas… crashing back into the store… then speeding off with the officer still partially inside.
The other two suspects ran off, but now this turned into something way worse — a moving, out-of-control situation with an officer trapped in the car.
As DeSouza drove through the city, the officer repeatedly ordered him to stop, trying to calm him down and end it safely.
DeSouza refused — telling the officer to get out… even saying he was going to crash the car, and demanding the officer jump from the moving vehicle.
For nearly two miles, this continued — reckless driving, constant commands, and a situation getting more dangerous by the second.
The officer warned him clearly: if he didn’t stop, he would be shot.
He didn’t stop.
The officer fired.
Moments later, the car crashed — and DeSouza bailed out, running into a nearby neighborhood.
Officers searched the area and found him about ten minutes later, hiding in bushes with a gunshot wound to his leg.
He was taken into custody and given medical aid before being transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
He now faces multiple charges, including kidnapping robbery, assault on an officer, and vehicle theft.
The officer suffered only minor injuries… and no other members of the public were hurt.
