The System finally punished the System
In a historic and landmark judgment on April 6, 2026, the Madurai District and Sessions Court has awarded the death penalty to 9 policemen involved in the brutal Sathankulam custodial death case.
This case, which rocked India in June 2020, involved the illegal detention and horrific torture of a father-son duo, P. Jayaraj (58) and J. Benicks (31). They were picked up by the Tamil Nadu police for a minor lockdown violation—allegedly keeping their mobile shop open 15 minutes past curfew. What followed was a night of “rarest of rare” brutality inside the police station that led to their deaths and sparked a nationwide movement against police brutality
