Thousands of copies pulped, fearing it would embolden youth against police and challenge authority. Instead, they were distributed to community groups, igniting awareness and challenging the status quo. #BookBanning #Censorship #Activism #Community #SocialJustice
Extract from 2017 African Odysseys banned film/Q&A ‘Blacks Britannica’. Revolutionary film by David Koff that was banned in 1978 then bought by Channel 4 but never shown. The documentary shows a host of Black British civil rights activists evidencing and critiquing institutional racism in 1970’s Britain . Some of the activists in the original film were in the audience and shared their experiences.
The African Odysseys monthly, educational, anti-racist film programme now in its 20th year was cancelled by the British Film Institute who refused to run a legally required Race Equality Impact Assessment, against expert advice from 25 academics, while rejecting an open letter to keep it from Professor Gus John and 18,000 people who signed the petition in support of African Odysseys https://www.change.org/p/save-17-years-of-black-film-history-at-british-film-institute/u/34332068
