A local nonprofit is raising money to fix an East Side mural after someone vandalized it on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, defacing the images of people killed by law enforcement.

The “Say Their Names” mural on Martin Luther King Drive was unveiled last year as a memorial to those who advocates say lost their lives to police violence.

Designed by local artist David Blancas, the mural is also a fixture at the beginning of San Antonio’s annual MLK Day March, the largest in the nation.

As thousands walked past on Monday, the images of 10 of the victims and their family members were covered by black paint, their names scratched out. A vandal also scribbled over the words “their names,” part of a banner at the top of the mural that reads “say their names.”
