A patrol stop in South Los Angeles escalated within seconds when a 26-year-old suspect opened fire on officers during a foot pursuit.
What began as a bicycle stop by LAPD Gang Enforcement Detail officers near Martin Luther King Jr. Park quickly turned into a life-threatening encounter. During the chase, the suspect pulled a handgun and fired multiple rounds, striking one officer in the legs before running through the park area. Officers continued the pursuit, taking the suspect into custody after a brief struggle.
Paramedics treated the injured officer, who is expected to make a full recovery. The suspect was also treated for abrasions and later booked for attempted murder. A “ghost gun” and spent shell casings were recovered at the scene. The case remains under investigation as part of LAPD’s standard review process.
🔎 This case serves as another illustration of the critical split-second decisions that LAPD officers must make when confronted with unpredictable threats.
