Some of the rioters, many dressed in black, blocked highways while social media footage showed a police car engulfed in flames. A local office belonging to a Dutch centrist party, Democrats 66, was also attacked.
Police used tear gas and a water cannon to disperse the rioters, and prevented a small group from accessing a Dutch parliament complex undergoing renovation.
The violence was quickly condemned by Geert Wilders, the leader of the hard-right Party for Freedom (PVV), who is forecast to win next month’s general election.
