At least 11 people were killed and over 500 arrested during nationwide protests across Kenya on July 7. The unrest, driven by Gen-Z youth, erupted on the anniversary of the 1990 Saba Saba rally for democracy. Demonstrators demanded justice for victims of police brutality, including a teacher and a street vendor allegedly killed by police. Kenyan police reportedly fired live rounds in parts of Nairobi, while rights groups accused them of collaborating with armed gangs. Former PM Raila Odinga has called for urgent police reforms. The UN said it was “deeply troubled” by the violence and urged accountability. Protesters say the cost-of-living crisis, police killings, and government impunity have gone too far.
