3 East Cleveland police officers sentenced, 1 continued on corruption related charges.
Four former East Cleveland Police officers are being sentenced Monday on corruption related crimes that happened between 2020 and 2023.
Judge Sherrie Miday will sentence Ian McInnes, Anthony Holmes, and Larry McDonald.
On Oct. 18, 2024, a jury found McInnes guilty of:
One count of attempted felonious assault
Three counts of assault
Three counts of interfering with civil rights
Three counts of dereliction of duty
According to Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley, McInnes physically attacked three men while they were being arrested.
On Feb. 25, 2020, McInnes kicked a person after a pursuit and foot chase. O’Malley said the victim was on the ground when McInnes kicked him in the ribs.
On Oct. 3, 2021, McInnes kicked a victim in the groin, while he was lying face down with his hands behind his back and several other officers were attempting to handcuff him.
On Feb. 14, 2024, McInnes kicked a victim in the back while he was on his knees and putting his hands behind his back.
His OPOTA license will be forfeited as a consequence of his felony convictions, said O’Malley.
A judge sentenced McInnes to 30 months in prison.
On Oct. 18, 2024, Holmes was found guilty by a jury of:
One count of tampering with records
One count of telecommunications fraud
One count of interfering with civil rights
One count of dereliction of duty
Those charges stem from a pursuit on Oct. 3, 2021.
During the pursuit, O’Malley said Holmes struck the victim’s vehicle and told another officer to say the victim had struck his vehicle.
On Jan. 10, Holmes also pleaded guilty to one count of attempted telecommunication fraud from an incident on March 12, 2023, when he withheld knowledge from Cleveland Police of an East Cleveland officer being involved in a chase and crash.
Holmes was sentenced to one year in prison and also lost his OPOTA license.
McDonald was found guilty by a jury on Jan. 23 on:
One count of tampering with records
One count of tampering with evidence
One count of telecommunications fraud
Three counts of obstructing official business
Two counts of dereliction of duty
On March 12, 2023, McDonald was involved in a pursuit after a traffic stop and the pursuit ended when the victim crashed into a bus stop in Cleveland.
McDonald saw the crash, but left and didn’t report the incident to dispatch.
McDonald was sentenced to four years in prison and also lost his OPOTA license.
