Domestic abusers are being released from prison early, despite probation officers warning they pose a threat to the public, whistleblowers reveal.
Two probation officers have spoken out, claiming they’re powerless to stop dangerous offenders being let out under the government’s early release scheme, aimed at easing the prison overcrowding crisis.
Since the emergency measures were introduced in October, domestic abusers, arsonists, and other criminals have been freed early, the officers report.
This contradicts Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s recent claim that no offender deemed a public safety threat would qualify for the scheme. Sunak assured that these offenders face the “toughest of licensing conditions.”
On Thursday, the scheme was extended further, allowing some prisoners to be released up to 70 days early due to worsening overcrowding in prisons across England and Wales, with fewer than 300 spaces left in male prisons.
The Ministry of Justice has refused to reveal the number of people released under the scheme.
