Police and protesters clashed in front of Istanbul’s Municipality building on Saturday (March 22), hours after detained opposition mayor Ekrem Imamoglu appeared in a Turkish court to denying terrorism charges brought against him. It was Imamoglu’s first court appearance since his detention on Wednesday (March 19) for alleged corruption and terrorism. In a court document seen by Reuters on Saturday, Imamoglu said in his defence during a hearing that he and his colleagues were “faced with unimaginable accusations and slanders.” The documents showed that Imamoglu answered at least 70 questions in total and denied all charges against him. Tens of thousands of Turks have taken to the streets in mostly peaceful demonstrations since Wednesday, although clashes have erupted in Izmir anbd Ankara for three nights running. Police used teargas and pepper spray pellets to disperse the protesters.
