Three police officers stood trial in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province on Friday for alleged abuse of power and dereliction of duty during a prison break case last September, local authorities said.

Zhang Gequn, Fan Deyan and Zhang Xiuli were tried at the People’s Court in Songbei District of Harbin, Heilongjiang’s provincial capital.

The procuratorate alleged that Zhang Gequn, former director of the detention center in Harbin’s Yanshou County, acted beyond his power to change rules and reduce the number of guards on night shift down from two to one.

Zhang Xiuli, former deputy director of the Yanshou Public Security Bureau, is suspected of being negligent in inspections. Fan, vice director of the prison, allegedly failed to uncover the rule violations by guards.

According to the procuratorate, Duan Baoren, a prison guard, violated rules on the evening of September 2, 2014 by taking inmate Gao Yulun to the interrogation room alone and leaving the door open. Gao, who had been awaiting execution for intentional homicide, attacked Duan while two other prisoners, Wang Damin and Li Haiwei, rushed out to join in the attack.

After killing Duan, the three inmates took keys from the guard’s pocket and escaped.

Following the crime, two of the escapees were captured on September 3 and 4, with the final fugitive detained on September 11 last year. The three were brought before court last month.

The outcome of both trials are still awaiting verdicts.
