On March 15th, protesters assembled for a rally to denounce police-related violence and deaths. Demonstrators advocated for a reduction in the city’s police budget.
Rally organizers were a group called Winnipeg Police Cause Harm (WPCH). They said police brutality is a problem — that the violence is disproportionately impacting Indigenous and Black people, people who experience mental illness, people living in poverty, and people with disabilities.
WPCH wants the city to defund police and instead spend money on what they call “life-sustaining resources,” so, for social workers, counsellors, and mobile crisis units. Several families spoke at the rally — including the family of James Wood.
