PETA has obtained alarming video footage of a Campbell County, Tenn., law-enforcement officer abusing Santo, his K-9 partner. The video shows Lt. Nathaniel Bostic, of Campbell County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), violently jerk Santo’s leash to pull him away from a decoy, even after the dog stops trying to engage with him. Then, he lifts Santo off the ground by the leash, seeming to hit him in the back with his knee and swinging him around by the leash while the dog struggles to find footing. Santo can be heard crying out, trying to breathe.

Now that the footage has resurfaced on Facebook and attracted the attention of the news media, CCSO has put out a statement saying they’ve put Bostic on leave until the case is investigated fully. PETA has requested that Bostic be reassigned from the K-9 unit to duties that don’t involve animals, and that, if Santo must be reassigned to a different handler, he not return to duty until the CCSO K9 Unit has adopted strictly humane training and handling protocols.
