On December 26, 2023, a traffic stop involving YouTuber Levi Trumbull and officers from the Frederick City Police Department in Frederick sparked public debate after the driver questioned whether the stop itself was lawful.

The stop was initiated over a fogged license plate cover, which officers stated obstructed visibility in violation of Maryland traffic law. During the encounter, officers asked about possible impairment, requested field sobriety testing, and ultimately searched the vehicle after consent was given. No contraband was found and no charges were filed related to impairment.

Following the incident, Levi Trumbull filed a Maryland Public Information Act request for the body camera footage. After public attention and discussion surrounding the legality of the stop, Chief Jason Lando held a press briefing and released the bodycam footage publicly in the interest of transparency. In his statement, the department affirmed that officers acted within the law and departmental policy.

In this video, you will see the full body camera footage from the stop, and the Chief’s public statement. This case raises important questions about police accountability, citizen rights during traffic stops, and the role of transparency in modern law enforcement. Was this a lawful stop by officers doing their jobs, or was it an overreach of authority?
