RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh is still reeling from the mass shooting that claimed five lives and put two people in the hospital.
The five-day report from Raleigh police is due out Thursday.
So what does that mean? And what will we learn?
A former Raleigh police officer said we’ll be able to get a better idea of what exactly happened last Thursday, but the report is still in the preliminary stages.
Messages of love and encouragement still fill the Hedingham neighborhood entrance days after the shooting garnered national attention.
Many of us are still trying to understand why this happened all while dealing with a sea of grief and trauma.
Thursday, Raleigh police will be releasing its five-day report as a method of transparency between police and the general public.
Lee Turner, a former Raleigh officer and now criminal defense attorney said it’s a preliminary report that gives insight as to what police believe happened on Thursday night and what they have found thus far in the investigation.
“The five-day report will generally be very fact-based with no type of assumptions or no type of loose ends,” Turner said.
“They’re going to give you a report that’s going to be what they know 100 percent just to provide that insight as to what they can tell you at this point in time.”
A motive could potentially be on the report but it’s likely too soon.
Turner said the report is incomplete as long as the suspected shooter is in the hospital, unable to answer questions. He did mention that he feels the way in which Raleigh police handled the emergency was quite impressive.
“It was amazing,” Turner said. “I was watching your coverage that night, I was talking to people and you on the phone – to hear what was going on and to think about the position these officers were in, they were very fortunate that nobody else got injured or was hurt afterwards.”
WRAL News has reached out to the city leaders to ask what time that report will be released. They haven’t been able to give us an exact time.
