Olaf Scholz speaks on his visit to China
The German Chancellor defended his visit to China, after receiving backlash for it, as China has close ties to Russia.
He made the trip to Beijing on 4 November, and attended talks at the Great Hall of the People of China.
It is reported the trip focussed on German-Chinese relations, economic cooperation, the Ukraine conflict and the Taiwan issue.
He stated: “I think that in light of all the debate about whether it was the right thing to travel there or not, the fact that the Chinese government, the president and I could state that there must not be any nuclear weapons used in this war, for that alone this trip was worth it.”
A statement from Beijing read: “Xi underscored the need for China and Germany, two major countries with great influence, to work together in times of change and instability and contribute more to global peace and development,” the Xinhua news agency.
