Number 7. James Curley
James Curley was an officer with the Ramapo, N.Y., police back in 2008 when a mechanic called the cops because he found a GPS tracking device on the car belonging to Curley’s ex-wife, Linda. Curley, who was on paid disability with the police department for 19 years stemming from an ankle injury, acted suspiciously at the mechanic’s shop, lied about his identity and tried to alter the mechanic’s notes. Investigators learned that a friend of Curley’s tracked Linda through the GPS online, then forwarded her movements to Curley. Authorities also uncovered Curley’s long history of hurting Linda, which led to their divorce proceeding. After 12 years of marriage Curley threatened to fatally hurt Linda on three separate occasions and even told said some terrifying things to her at one point such as “I found a place today where I could end you and nobody would hear you scream,”
The Rockland County Family Court gave Linda custody of the couple’s children and a restraining order against Curley after she showed in divorce proceedings that Curley had repeatedly followed her around in his truck. Federal prosecutors indicted Curley in 2008 for two counts of interstate stalking of his ex-wife and one count of interstate violation of a protection order.
Number 6. Michael Dotro
Former Edison Police Officer Michael Dotro expressed no remorse before being sentenced to 20 years in state prison for setting fire to the home of a superior officer while the police captain and his family were inside asleep. He offered no apology to the family of Capt Mark Anderko, who had to flee the burning house, no remorse for the witness he tampered with and no remorse for the other officers who lost their jobs because of their involvement with him.
He said nothing in the courtroom during the nearly hour-long sentencing and now must serve 17 years before he becomes eligible for parole. Dotro’s crimes included first-degree attempt and second-degree aggravated arson.
Number 5. Daniel Holtzclaw
In 2016, former Oklahoma City police officer Daniel Holtzclaw was sentenced to 263 years in prison after an Oklahoma County jury found him guilty of 18 physical-attack related crimes against eight female accusers. Holtzclaw was acquitted of 18 other related crimes against an additional five female accusers. Holtzclaw abused his position as an officer by running background checks to find information that could be used to coerce victims into illicit acts. During the trial, the defense questioned the victims’ credibility during cross-examination, bringing up their criminal records. Of the thirteen women who accused Holtzclaw, several had criminal histories such as drug arrests, and all of them were African American. The prosecution argued that victims were deliberately chosen by Holtzclaw for these specific reasons.
