San Diego Officer Shot During Gunfight With Double-Homicide Suspect

San Diego, California — On November 13, 2024, at 8:22 a.m., the San Diego Police Department received multiple calls about a shooting at 1300 Union Street near the County Courthouse. Responding officers found two victims, a husband and wife, inside a car with gunshot wounds. They were pronounced deceased at the scene. A description of the suspect, later identified as 26-year-old Christopher Farrell, was broadcast over SDPD radios and re-broadcast over Harbor PD Radios. Investigators learned after the incident that Farrell reloaded his weapon as he fled on ash street. Ge pioneer park just after 9 a.m., a community member saw a man matching Farrell’s description approximately one mile away near w juniper street and Ketner Boulevard. The witness reported Farrell was hiding behind a utility box on a cul-de-sac at W Juniper Street.

The witness flagged down port of San Diego Harbor Police officers in the area. Four Harbor Police officers responded to the area and made contact with Farrell. Officers gave Farrell commands to show his hands. Farrell pointed a handgun at officers while using a metal electrical box as cover. From his position behind the electrical box, Farrell was not clearly visible on any of the officers’ body-worn cameras. However, multiple citizen cell phone videos show Farrell’s position as he pointed a firearm at officers. One minute and thirteen seconds after officers made contact and identified themselves, an exchange of gunfire occurred. Farrell fired his gun multiple times, striking officer Patrick Lynch. Officer Kahn and Corporal Day discharged their service weapons, striking Farrell. After the threat from Farrell abated, officer Kahn began medical aid on officer lynch.

Corporal Day was on the north side of juniper street when he discharged his service weapon. A citizen on Ketner Boulevard captured on cell phone the officers discharging their service weapons and officer Lynch falling backwards after being shot by Farrell. Farrell was hit by gunfire multiple times and fell near the electrical box. Officers could see that he was breathing and his gun was within his reach. Officers approached using a ballistic shield and secured his firearm. Farrell was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Farrell’s semi-automatic handgun was recovered along with multiple knives, an expended magazine, and three magazines clipped to his pants pocket. Officer Lynch was shot in the upper thigh/hip area and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. A few days after the shooting, Officer Lynch was recovering at home with his family.
