5 killed as jeep collides with truck in Rajasthan
Five people were killed and 11 others injured after the jeep they were travelling in collided with a truck in Rajasthan’s Nagaur district on Thursday night, police said.The accident took place in the Burdi area when the jeep was going to Ringas in Sikar district from the Ramdevra temple in Jaisalmer. The passengers were residents of Abawas village in Ringas, Circle Officer (CO) Jayal Rameshwar Lal said.

The Punjab government on Thursday said it has paid the pending payment of Rs 75 crore to cane growers, clearing their outstanding dues against cooperative sugar mills. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the state government released Rs 75 crore as payment to sugarcane farmers on Wednesday. Mann said with this, there is no outstanding due of sugarcane growers left against the nine cooperative sugar mills at Ajnala, Batala, Budhewal, Bhogpur, Fazilka, Gurdaspur, Morinda, Nakodar and Nawanshahr.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a grand statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose near India Gate in the national capital on Thursday. The jet black granite statue, with a height of 28 feet will be placed under the Canopy near India Gate. The statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, which will be unveiled by the Prime Minister, will be installed in the same place where a hologram statue of Netaji was unveiled earlier this year on Parakram Diwas (January 23) by him to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji.

Pakistan: Seven injured in Quetta grenade attackAt least, seven people, including a woman and a minor girl, were injured on Wednesday night when unidentified motorcyclists hurled a grenade at a roundabout at Quetta’s Khuram-i-Dad Chowk, local media reported. According to the police, some motorcyclists hurled a hand grenade at the roundabout near Safeer mosque after which seven people were injured and three of them are seriously injured, reported Dawn. Maharashtra logs 1,076 new COVID-19 cases, 6 deaths; active tally at 7,082
Maharashtra on Thursday registered 1,076 fresh cases of COVID-19 and six new deaths linked to the infection, taking the overall tally to 81,08,442 and the toll to 1,48,280, said a state health department official. The state on Wednesday had reported 1,094 cases and five deaths related to the viral infection. As many as 1,031 patients recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, pushing up their cumulative count to 79,53,080 and leaving the state with an active caseload of 7,082, he said. The state’s coronavirus recovery rate was 98.08 per cent, while the fatality rate stood at 1.82 per cent, the official said. Of the six coronavirus fatalities reported in the last 24 hours, two each were from the Mumbai administrative circle and Pune district (rural parts) and one each from municipal corporation areas of Pimpri-Chinchwad and Nagpur, he said.

Ensure strict compliance with COVID guidelines in poll campaign: Delhi HC tells ECI
The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to ensure strict compliance with its guidelines related to COVID norms to be followed by political parties and leaders organising public meetings and poll campaigning during elections. The court while disposed of public interest litigation (PIL) sought action against the leaders of different political parties for violating the COVID guidelines of mask and social distancing during rallies. The Bench of Justice Satish Chander Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad disposed of the matter and said the Election Commission has to comply with its guidelines issued in the last year on April 16, August 2021.
ECB hikes interest rates by record 75 basis points
The European Central Bank made its biggest ever interest rate hike on Thursday as policymakers seek to tame record eurozone inflation. The ECB lifted its key rates by 75 basis points, leaving them sitting in a range of between 0.75 and 1.5 percent. It came after the bank hiked rates by 50 basis points in July, its first increase in more than a decade.

Meghalaya HC issues contempt notice to top officials for failing to curb illegal mining
The Meghalaya High Court has issued a suo motu contempt notice to the state’s chief secretary and mining secretary for failing to prohibit illegal coal mining in the state besides wilful failure to declare the quantum of coal dumped at various places as per previous court orders. A bench headed by Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee, however, said the order will not be effective and will remain in abeyance as the advocate general has sought 10 days to seriously address all issues. “It is noticed with alarm that the administration has been attempting to obfuscate the issue which leads to the perception that it may not be serious in implementing the prohibition on coal mining,” the bench said.

The death toll from a fire at a karaoke parlour in southern Vietnam has climbed to 33, officials said on Thursday, with police blaming some of the fatalities on customers who failed to heed employees’ warnings to flee and remained inside locked rooms. The death in a hospital of a person who was injured in the Tuesday night fire added to the 32 victims — 17 men and 15 women — found earlier in a search of the four-story building housing the An Phu karaoke parlour in Thuan, a city in Binh Duong province, the Vietnam News Agency and other state media reported.
