The custodial death of Ajith Kumar, a temple guard from Sivaganga district, has once again brought to light the police brutality prevalent in Tamil Nadu. Despite repeated public outrage and court interventions, incidents of custodial torture continue and accountability remains as an question.

From Sathankulam to Sivaganga, custodial violence in Tamil Nadu follows the same way, brutal torture, unanswered questions, and no justice. In these instances, Rahim’s case highlights a disturbing pattern of how at every instance there were attempts made to shield the police. From not recording his injuries to the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) waking up three years later to Tamil Nadu DGP’s inaction to punish the erred cops.

In this week’s episode of In Public Interest, TNM Senior News Editor Shabbir Ahmed speaks to Abdul Rahim, a young advocate who was brutally assaulted by police officers in Chennai three years ago. Even with video and material evidence backing his claims, not a single officer has been held accountable yet.
