NYPD cops drag away and arrest machete-wielding suspect in Brooklyn [Video]

A machete-wielding suspect had to be dragged away by cops after he chased and harassed Jewish people in Brooklyn Monday night.

Saul Sosa, 32, from Brooklyn, was bundled out of a building by a team of NYPD cops in Borough Park before they carried him into a patrol car.

The suspect was carrying a long knife and had been ‘chasing after people’, according to Shmira, a Jewish safety patrol group.

They worked with the New York Police Department to apprehend the alleged knifeman before anyone was injured.

Police have not said if the attack was anti-Semitic or if the arrested man was himself Jewish.

The incident happened shortly before midnight Monday near New Utrecht Avenue and 47th Street.

Shmira Public Safety said in a statement on Twitter: ‘Shmira dispatch received a hotline call for a violent subject chasing after people with a machete on New Utrecht Avenue.

‘Our @CWSPshmira members quickly responded to secure the scene, thanks @NYPD66Pct he was safely apprehended without anyone getting hurt #WorkingTogether.’

It had been reported that the suspect had been deliberately targeting Jews but a spokesman for the NYPD denied this.

An NYPD spokesman told MailOnline: ‘On January 24 at around 23.40 we had a 911 call for a male with a large knife in the area of New Utrecht Avenue and 47th street.

‘Police were informed by a safety patrol he had a large weapon.

‘This individual was menacing people in the community. He was arrested and charged with menacing and possession of a weapon.’

It comes as latest figures show serious crimes across New York City have increased in 2022 – despite new Mayor Eric Adams dismissing concerns as a ‘perception of fear’.

Crimes in the five boroughs jumped by more than a third in the first two weeks of this year compared to the same period in 2021 — with transit crimes alone soaring 65.5 percent.

On the transit system, there have so far been 96 incidents of serious crime versus 58 last year, driven by a jump in robberies and grand larcenies.

There were rises in all categories of crime except for murders and burglaries.

Speaking to reporters last week about incidents on the subway, Mayor Adams said: New Yorkers are safe on the subway system. What we must do is remove the perception of fear.’
