New York State Police Trooper Shoots Man After Pursuit in Sullivan County

Rock Hill, NY — On July 16, 2024, at approximately 2:23 a.m., New York State Police (NYSP) troopers were pursuing 32-year-old Albert Melendez, after they tried to pull him over for a suspended vehicle registration on Rock Hill Drive in Rock Hill, Sullivan County. At the intersection of Rock Hill Drive and Emerald Place, Melendez stopped his vehicle. Trooper Peters got out of his patrol vehicle and approached Melendez and yelled for him to stop his vehicle. But Melendez’s vehicle continued forward, hitting Peters, who then fired his service weapon, striking Melendez. Melendez was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The trooper sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the encounter and was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and has since been released.
