At his morning press conference at the National Palace, the president explained that until four years ago, Mexico was a State that did not seek the welfare of the people, and was dominated by a gang of criminals.
However, corruption is now a serious and punishable crime, which it was not before, and taxes are no longer condoned. We are talking about 300 billion pesos (15 billion dollars) a year, in favor of those at the top who did not pay them.
I can prove, he said, that the big companies, the banks, and important businesspeople, did not pay and if they did, they paid them back, and none of that exists anymore.
Nor are there any more juicy contracts given to construction companies or suppliers, or to friends, and that is over. And although we are not satisfied, gasoline is no longer stolen, which was something deeply rooted, as was all corruption.
Lopez Obrador recalled that up to 80,000 barrels of oil were stolen daily, and now 5,000 are stolen and that is why we are not satisfied, even though it is a big difference, since we should reach zero theft. But the country is saving, or recovering, 231 billion pesos (11.5 billion dollars).
Lopez Obrador estimated that there is no movement in the world like the one in Mexico; that is a guarantee because it involves citizens’ awakening, but he acknowledged corruption in the Judicial Power and called on judges to be trained before the release of criminals due to inefficiency or bad faith factors.
