Kigame seeks to privately prosecute top officials over police brutality

A formal petition has been filed seeking judicial declarations that the widespread arrests, killings, abductions, and acts of torture committed against peaceful protesters between June 2024 and July 2025 constitute grave human rights violations. Activist and former presidential aspirant Reuben Kigame, in a petition filed at the high court, seeks to privately prosecute senior security officials—including interior cabinet secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, inspector general of police Douglas Kanja, and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohamed Amin—over alleged crimes against humanity committed during the Gen Z-led protests in 2024 and 2025.
