The family of the police officer, John O’Keefe, whom Karen Read is accused of killing by striking him with her vehicle and leaving him to die in the snow, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against her and two bars where they had been drinking that night.

The lawsuit attributes O’Keefe’s death to Read and also accuses the bars of negligence for continuing to serve her alcohol despite signs of intoxication. It claims that the first bar served her seven alcoholic drinks within about 90 minutes on the night of January 28, 2022. Read then took her last drink to a second bar, where she was served a shot and a mixed drink within an hour.
