Indianapolis, Indiana — On November 10, 2023, at approximately 11:00 a.m., IMPD North District Officers were dispatched to the 3900 block of Caroline Avenue on a report of a man, later identified as 31-year-old Dontriell Hood, actively firing shots. The initial 9-1-1 caller reported that the man was displaying erratic behavior. A security camera on Hood’s front porch captured the arrival of the first IMPD patrol vehicle. Hood pointed his gun out of his front door. This was discovered after the incident when investigators obtained the security camera video. Officers parked their patrol vehicles in the street. Officers observed Hood on the south side of the residence on the gravel driveway. Officers gave Hood commands to “Drop the firearm” and to “Lay flat on the ground and do not move.” Hood dropped the handgun and laid on the ground. Officers ordered Hood to stand up and walk towards them.

When Hood reached the end of the driveway, he turned around, and ran back down the driveway to the area where he dropped the gun. Officers yelled “Don’t do that.” Hood dropped to the ground, grabbed the firearm, and began to stand up. Officer Finch then discharged his service weapon, striking Hood. When Officer Finch discharged his service weapon, his body-worn camera view was obscured by a patrol car as he took cover. Hood dropped the gun, and officers ordered him to move away from it. Officers approached to detain him and began medical aid, including the application of a tourniquet to his arm. Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services arrived to the scene and transported Hood to the hospital in serious but stable condition. No officers or uninvolved citizens were injured during this incident.

Hood was charged with the following by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office: Resisting Law Enforcement (felony level 6), Unlawful Possession of a Firearm (felony level 6), Criminal Recklessness (felony level 5). Hood received a five-year sentence on August 27, 2024, with one year to be spent in prison and one additional year spent in community corrections. The remaining portion of the sentence will feature two years suspended to mental health reporting probation.
