Across the length and breadth of Nigeria, here are the biggest stories around Nigeria’s legislators and the institution of parliament you mustn’t miss this Friday:
President Buhari to send National Social Investment Bill to NASS
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved for the National Social Investment Programme (Establishment) Bill 2022 to be sent to the National Assembly.
This was one of the outcomes of its meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House on Wednesday.
Since the federal government’s establishment of the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP) in 2016, as a means to tackle poverty and hunger across the country, the development comes as a plan to institutionalise it and provide a legal framework for its continued existence.
PDP Crisis: Ex-Senate President takes over at PDP BOT
A former President of the Senate, Adolphus Wabara, has been named Acting Chairman for the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), following the resignation of Walid Jibrin.
The embattled National Chairman of the party, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, had announced Senator Jibrin’s resignation at the start of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Thursday, shortly after the BoT meeting.
Before his rise to the BOT Chairmanship, Senator Wabara was the Secretary of the party’s advisory organ. He is also expected to be appointed to the PDP Presidential Campaign Council.
RECs: Presidency insists on INEC nominees sent for Senate screening
There are indications that President Muhammadu Buhari will be insisting on his nominees for Resident Electoral Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) sent to the Senate for confirmation.
In spite of recent allegations of corruption and partisanship against four out of the 19 nominations made by the President, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Wednesday, said there are no plans to withdraw the names.
As the Senate resumes from its annual recess in a few days, the feeling is that there will be increased opposition by civil society organisations and stakeholders in the electoral process against their confirmation.
Contempt of Court: APC ‘threatens’ Bayelsa Speaker, INEC over sacked lawmaker
The All Progressives Congress (APC) is threatening to drag the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Abraham Ngobere, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to court for contempt.
The Bayelsa State House of Assembly and a sacked lawmaker representing Brass State Constituency 1, Daniels Charles is also likely in trouble for contempt following his sack by the Court of Appeal.
“The Court of Appeal has sacked him and INEC should have conducted an election into the vacant seat. Hon Charles is no longer a member of the House and he should have returned all the monies he collected since April 2021,” the APC says.
“Ex-Edo Assembly Speaker lied, she is headed for LP” – APC
The Edo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to the resignation of Elizabeth Ativie, a former speaker of the State House of Assembly, from its fold this week.
In a statement issued by Uwadiae Igbingie, the APC state publicity secretary in Benin City, the party said Ativie left because she failed to substitute the name of the winner of the Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency Primary election where she came a distant third.
Uwadiae added that the party was also aware that Ativie was already holding meetings with the Labour Party with the intention of joining the party.
The former lawmaker had claimed that the said primary election was controversial and the APC did not heed First Lady Aisha Buhari as well as the party’s national secretariat directive that a percentage of all elective positions must be reserved for female aspirants.
