Elon and Trump
Republican presidential candidate and former President of The United States, Donald Trump sat on Monday, August 12th, for a friendly two-hour interview with billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk on Musk’s social media platform X. The interview pulled in a combined 1 billion views, according to the tech billionaire, who has now offered to host Vice President Kamala Harris for a similar X chat.

Immigration
The US border is at a breaking point. Last year, roughly 3.2 million desperate people have tried to get through illegally to the United States from Mexico. The ongoing migrant crisis is unprecedented, both in scale and the impact it has had beyond the border states to cities located deep within the country. Major cities like New York, Denver, and Chicago are finding themselves under extreme financial pressure, exacerbated by the lack of federal funding or assistance. So just how long can cities withstand the recent surge of migrants and what do they need to end the crisis?

Abortion
The debate in the United States on a woman’s right to abortion has raged on for decades and is as divisive as ever. For conservatives, it is about religious values and the country’s future as a Christian nation. For progressives and many moderates, it is about individual rights. The reversing of the Roe vs. Wade ruling in the summer of 2022 was a controversial moment – both for those who believe termination ends an innocent life, and for those who feel any restrictions breaches a woman’s right to control her own body. Is there still room for compromise among the two camps on abortion and other values- and lifestyle-based issues.

Religion
Freedom of religion is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. But the role that religious beliefs should play in public life has never been more contentious. The Dangerous Union of Religion & Politics in the US along with the rise of authoritarianism and religious extremism in 2024, questions the future of American democracy.

Racism
Why Racism Is the Biggest Issue in America. The fact that our country is divided is not new. In many respects, it can be traced back to the founding of a nation on the promise of freedom while dependent on slavery, a time when many could not participate in the democracy being created. Laws are intended to maintain order and promote justice, but what happens when those laws promote and spread discrimination and bigotry?

Transgenderism
As transgender people have increasingly gained acceptance and visibility, conservative lawmakers have zeroed in on restricting their rights: keeping transgender children off girls’ sports teams and out of certain bathrooms, and blocking them from receiving gender-affirming medical care. In response, a growing number of Democratic-controlled states have moved to protect such rights, especially access to gender-affirming care. Most favor protecting trans people from discrimination, but fewer support policies related to medical care for gender transitions; many are uneasy with the pace of change on trans issues. Roughly eight-in-ten U.S. adults say there is at least some discrimination against transgender people in our society.
